(BOYS) Pitt Meadows Air Force fly past Kits Blue Demons

Pitt Meadows Air Force v. Kitsilano Blue Demons

Still in the brand new STA gym for this one although, unlike the Walnut Grove/STA girls’ game, there is not a ton of dominant height in this one. However, what we do have is a track meet.

First a word about the haberdashery. For Pitt Meadows we have twice as many headbands on the floor (2) as bowties on the bench (1). Not sure if any of that is legal but it is visually entertaining. It brought the crowd to life.

And now to the game, with a score 13-11 PM and 4 minutes left in the first quarter there was a long delay for scoreboard correction. Your correspondent nodded off for a bit. Kits is a young team with a majority of Gr. 11s. It is the reverse for Pitt. And so the elders lead 24-17 at end Q1.

This is an interesting game. No dominant stars but an undercurrent of hard-scrabble determination. That can win games. Krestow for Kits, despite being in a constant battle with his uniform, ably conducted the Demons’ offence but the Airmen nudged further away. Needless to say the game is far from over. Kits is too feisty.

Finally a three from Pitt’s Sid Singh incited the fans and then a couple more quick baskets to put their lead at 21.

Halftime: PM 44 (Pardy 18, Ostovari 8), Kits 26 (Krestow 12)

Fun halftime fact: The two-tone gym floor at the new STA gym is part maple from the Belgian Congo and darker ancient Egyptian mahogany inside the arcs. (Much more fun when you make it up.)

In order to induce a Kits timeout the Air Force decided to press the Demons and did so with the desired results. Time-out taken and the lead sprang to 28 in a wink.

These are a coupl’a schools with deep, storied basketball tradition. No one is quitting on this game, least of all the Blue Demons. However, a smooth three from bespectacled Max Redmond stretched the lead for Pitt to 31 to end the 3rd quarter scoring.

While Kits showed some inspired bench play, the gap hovered around the low thirties- mainly because the PM benchers were also inspired. Slowly, very slowly, Kits ate into the lead until, with 1:30 to go in the game, it was cut to 24. Krestow for Kits continued to drive impossibly to the basket racking up foul shots along the way.

Final score: Pitt Meadows Air Force 79, Kitsilano Blue Demons 53

Player of the Game: Brendan Pardy of Pitt Meadows
