The countdown is on – the annual No Regrets Basketball Tournament is quickly approaching and the Organizing Committee is extremely excited about this year’s tournament! The tournament will feature teams from all across B.C., as well as teams in both the boys and girls divisions from Sturgeon Heights Collegiate in Winnipeg. The Winnipeg teams are very eager to head west to warmer temperatures, less snow and most importantly an amazing weekend of basketball.
Similar to past years, the No Regrets Basketball Tournament will include a number of local North Shore teams. All of the tournament games will be hosted by four north shore schools, including Carson Graham, Argyle, Handsworth and Collingwood, with the finals being held at Collingwood’s incredible facilities.
This year’s No Regrets Basketball Tournament features a number of teams with high expectations for their upcoming seasons. The Girls’ draw looks to be extremely competitive with Walnut Grove and Argyle being pre-season top ten ranked teams (AAA) along with honorable mention candidates Carson Graham (AAA) and Holy Cross (AA). On the Boys side of the draw we have a number of teams that have been ranked in the top ten or have been identified as honourable mentions in their respective divisions. Kitsilano, Handsworth, Argyle, Charles Hays and Collingwood have all been identified as pre-season favourites in B.C. Also, we know the Sturgeon Heights teams from Winnipeg would not be making this trip to the west coast if they did not have plans to make some noise in Manitoba this year.
The Tournament has gained considerable credibility in the basketball community in Western Canada and a number of coaches have reached out and provided their perspective:
“My Walnut Grove Gators Sr. girls had an amazing experience playing in the No Regrets tourney last year. As soon as we finished playing in the final game, I asked for an invite back. Everything about the tourney was first class; the venues, the hospitality, and all the personal touches that were provided by the organizational team and the awesome group of volunteers. However, the most impactful aspect for our team was hearing the Quinn Keast story prior to the start of the tourney and connecting with his legacy as student-athletes. The opportunity to compete in the No Regrets tourney in honour of Quinn Keast is an honour for our players.”
- Darren Rowell, Walnut Grove Gators Senior Girls Head Coach
“We are really looking forward to this season as we have some great returning players who have been working hard over the summer, as well as some grade 11’s who will be able to come in and make an instant impact. Handsworth is always excited to play in the No Regrets Basketball Tournament, and in particular we are looking forward to the annual spirit game at Handsworth which makes it extra special.”
- Cam Mowat, Handsworth Royals Senior Boys Head Coach
“The No Regrets tournament has become one of the most anticipated tournaments of the [Salmon Arm] Golds' schedule, for players, coaches and parents alike. The tournament is incredibly well organized, competition is strong, draws teams from western Canada, and our experience is always positive, making the snowy drive from the interior an easy decision.”
- Rhys Waters, Salmon Arm Golds Senior Boys Head Coach 2016-2017
